Background
Migrant adolescent girls often face challenges related to health, hygiene, and limited access to reliable information about menstrual care. Recognizing this gap, Don Bosco Migrant Services organized a focused orientation and awareness program to support the young girls residing in the Pondur common hostel.
Program Objectives
* To introduce participants to the services offered by DBMS.
* To create awareness on menstrual hygiene and its importance in everyday health.
* To empower adolescent girls with knowledge, confidence, and safe practices.
Participation
A total of 15 girls participated in the session. The small group size allowed for open interaction, sharing of doubts, and personalized guidance.
Activities Conducted
1. Orientation on DBMS Services– Staff explained the various programs and support mechanisms available for migrant families, including health, education, and welfare initiatives.
2. Awareness on Menstrual Hygiene– A participatory session covering:
* Proper menstrual hygiene practices.
* Dispelling myths and misconceptions.
* Use and disposal of sanitary products.
* Importance of nutrition and self-care during menstruation.
3.Interactive Discussion – Girls were encouraged to ask questions, share their challenges, and receive practical solutions.
Key Outcomes
* Participants gained clear knowledge about menstrual hygiene and safe practices.
* The session improved confidence in discussing sensitive health topics.
* Girls became aware of DBMS services that can support their wellbeing.
* The program created a safe and supportive space for adolescent health dialogue.
Feedback from Participants
The girls expressed their gratitude, stating that such awareness sessions were rare but highly needed. They requested DBMS to organize more health and life-skills training programs in the future.
Conclusion
The program successfully addressed both informational and emotional needs of adolescent girls in Pondur village. By combining service orientation with menstrual hygiene awareness, DBMS ensured that the participants are not only better informed but also feel supported. This initiative represents a step toward building healthier, more confident young women among migrant communities.
