Orientation & Social Exposure for Theology Students

Date: 15 August 2025

Don Bosco Migrant Services (DBMS) organized an orientation program on 15th August 2025 to provide second-year theology students from Sacred Heart Seminary with practical exposure to social work among migrant communities. A total of 25 students participated in the program, which aimed to deepen their understanding of community development, social welfare, and the day-to-day challenges faced by migrants. The orientation was followed by a five-day social exposure program designed to bridge classroom learning with field-based experiences.

During the orientation session, students were introduced to the objectives, structure, and ongoing programs of DBMS. The session highlighted the importance of engaging with migrant issues such as health, education, and welfare rights, while also stressing the role of NGOs in creating inclusive platforms for vulnerable communities. This was followed by five days of social exposure, during which the students visited various NGOs working with migrant populations. Their activities included direct community engagement, observing field operations, assisting in welfare initiatives, and interacting with migrant families. These experiences provided students with valuable insights into program management and the practical challenges of working with marginalized groups.

The initiative had a significant impact on the participating students. It enabled them to develop a deeper understanding of the realities faced by migrant workers while equipping them with practical skills in community interaction, program support, and collaborative initiatives. The program also fostered empathy and social awareness, motivating students to apply their theological learning in ways that contribute meaningfully to community development and social transformation.

In conclusion, the orientation and social exposure program organized by DBMS successfully combined theoretical knowledge with hands-on experience. It offered theology students a unique opportunity to engage directly with migrant communities, preparing them to play an active role in promoting social justice, welfare, and holistic community development in their future vocations.
