Empowering Migrants: The Don Bosco Shelter Initiative
31 January, 2025

Introduction
On the auspicious occasion of the feast of St. John Bosco, the founder of the Salesian Congregation, the Don Bosco Migrant Shelter was solemnly blessed by Rev. Fr. Don Bosco, the Provincial of the Salesian Province of Chennai (INM). This noble initiative, undertaken by the INM Province, is situated within the Anat Farm Community and is spearheaded by its esteemed Directors, Rev. Fr. Pitchai Muthu and Rev. Fr. Simolin. The shelter aims to provide significant support and opportunities for the migrant sector, aligning with the mission and vision of Don Bosco in uplifting marginalized communities.
Objective and Scope
The Don Bosco Migrant Shelter is established with a dual purpose: first, to serve as a manufacturing unit offering on-the-job training in various vocational skills, and second, to act as a transit home for homeless migrants, enabling them to rebuild their lives with dignity. The initiative is designed to empower the migrant community through skill enhancement and economic self-sufficiency.
Manufacturing and Vocational Training
The manufacturing unit within the shelter, carried out in collaboration with Miracle Manufacturers, will provide practical training in cutting and stitching bags, uniforms, T-shirts, and other relevant apparel and merchandise. This vocational training aims to equip migrants with essential skills that will enhance their employability and financial independence. By fostering self-reliance, the initiative seeks to contribute meaningfully to the social and economic integration of migrant workers.
Shelter and Livelihood Support
In addition to skill development, the Don Bosco Migrant Shelter will function as a transit home where homeless migrants can find temporary accommodation. This provision ensures a secure and supportive environment, allowing them the opportunity to earn a livelihood through the manufacturing unit while seeking more permanent employment and housing solutions.
Conclusion
The establishment of the Don Bosco Migrant Shelter represents a significant step towards addressing the challenges faced by the migrant community. By offering both skill development and temporary shelter, this initiative aligns with the broader mission of the Salesians to serve the underprivileged and marginalized. The blessing of this shelter on the feast of St. John Bosco underscores the commitment of the INM Province to upholding the values of compassion, empowerment, and social justice.
With the continued support and guidance of the Salesian community, this initiative is expected to bring about a transformative impact on the lives of countless migrants, fostering hope and resilience within society.
